Reintroducing Rachel Reinhard Rachel Reinhard joined Avenues in 2012 as an associate teacher in one of the English sections of kindergarten. (In the immersion classes, nursery through grade three, children spend half their day in a class conducted in English and half in a class conducted in either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese.) In 2013, she moved to a comparable position with one of the English sections of first grade. This fall, she will become one of the head teachers of an English section of second grade.
Rachel came to Avenues from Bank Street School for Children in New York City, where she supported first and third grade students as the literacy specialist intern. She worked closely with teachers and specialists to ensure that students’ diverse instructional needs were being met through reading and writing workshops, a guided reading program and individual student assessment.
Prior to Bank Street Rachel worked for three years at Ethical Culture Fieldston School (New York), mostly as a first grade assistant teacher. She also gained experience as a student teacher at P.S. 321 in Brooklyn and at the Neighborhood School in the East Village.
Rachel graduated from Marymount Manhattan College with a B.A. degree in English literature and has an M.S. Ed. from Bank Street College of Education in early childhood and childhood general education. She also has an M. Ed. degree in advanced literacy specialization from Bank Street. She also holds New York State certification in early childhood education (birth to grade two) and childhood education for grades 1–6.
For most of her life, Rachel competed on the weekends as an equestrian rider. She now spends her time playing tennis and taking her dogs to the beach. She likes to travel abroad, which she does every summer.
